Der Donau-Radweg hat sich im letzten Jahrzehnt zum wichtigsten Radfernweg Europas entwickelt. Grund dafür waren in erster Linie die landschaftliche Schönheit des Donautals sowie der kulturelle und historische Reichtum, der hier anzutreffen ist. Solche Besucherströme sind aber ohne gute Infrastruktur und dazugehöriges Serviceangebot nicht möglich. Dies bedeutet, im Fall des Donau-Radweges, gut ausgebaute beschilderte Radwege und mannigfaltige Dienstleistungen, die sich an den Bedürfnissen von Radreisenden orientieren. Im Folgenden sind einige praktische Hinweise zur Handhabung des Buches und zur Erleichterung der Vorbereitungen für die Tour angeführt

Länge
Die Länge des Donau-Radweges mit Start in Passau und Ziel in Wien beträgt rund 320 Kilometer. Die Ausflüge und Varianten haben eine Länge von etwa 160 Kilometern.

Wegequalität & Verkehr
Die Radroute entlang der Donau ist sehr gut ausgebaut, praktisch überall gibt es asphaltierte Radwege oder verkehrsarme Straßen, meist sogar beiderseits der Donau.

Beschilderung
Die Orientierung am Donau-Radweg wird durchgehend durch spezielle Wegweiser erleichtert, was jedoch nicht ausschließt, dass manchmal ein Radschild fehlt oder verdreht wurde. Die Radwege sind in Ober- und Niederösterreich mit grünen, rechteckigen Schildern versehen. Der Donau-Radweg ist in den meisten Fällen als solcher namentlich gekennzeichnet. An diesen schließen regionale Radwanderwege an. Ausflüge und Varianten folgen zum Teil solchen Beschilderungen, im Text wird darauf ausdrücklich hingewiesen.

Goede wandelkaart met vrijwel alle topografische details als hoogtelijnen, vegetatie, schaduwtekening maar ook de ingetekende wandelroutes en in veel gevallen ook fietsroutes (MTB). Gevaarlijke routes worden als zodanig weergegeven met een bepaalde markering. Berghutten en campings zijn goed terug te vinden op deze kaarten.

Daarnaast staan de toeristische bezienswaardigheden met symbolen vermeld. Kleurgebruik kan soms vrij fel overkomen, daardoor oogt deze detailkaart wellicht wat druk, maar het blijft een goed leesbare kaart. Sommige kaarten zijn geplastificeerd, maar helaas niet allemaal. De graden staan aan de zijkanten van de kaart, daardoor te gebruiken voor GPS.
