How this guide is laid out

The Charles Tait guides for Scotland are brimming with information, which will both inspire you before your trip and enhance your experience whilst you're there. The first 70 pages are used to give an overview of the ancient sites, natural environment, archaeology, history and culture of the Outer Hebrides.

The following Gazetteer sections discuss the main islands of Lewis, Harris, The Uists, and Barra. Each of these are into smaller regions and coasts of each island, delving into the above topics in far greater and more specific detail. Within these sections, text and photographs build a picture of the area, with historical photos thrown in for comparison. Sections of mapping are given to help with navigation and the sights are listed in text boxes with the relevant page numbers at the beginning of each section. Driving distances for each section are also provided in the heading.

Following the side trips is information on how to get to and around the Outer Hebrides by ferry, plane, public transport or car. There are eight pages of contact information and websites for several of the attractions discussed in the guide.

The 12 suggested itineraries that correspond to the earlier sections are listed all together from page 222-245 with another copy of the overview map with marked POIs. Each itinerary includes an individual overview map, detailed directions, OS Landranger and Explorer map numbers and corresponding page numbers for information on the sights.

A break down of the key places to visit and general information for recommended tours and attractions are clearly listed at the back of the book.

At the back of the book is a bibliography and suggested background reading and maps to further enhance your discovery of the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. Finally, there is an index to help you navigate the guide.
