This is a modest upgrading, with little change over the previous edition; same cover, same ISBN, same price. We ran out of copies faster than expected and found few changes necessary to make to the artwork. Yucatan is one of those parts of Mexico seemingly unaffected by the Drug Wars, which appear to be tapering off in any case, and is as popular as ever.

This USA map from Michelin is part of their red national map series. These are perfect for route planning as well as getting around by car once you're there. They clearly mark out major roads and also show many of the more important minor roads. Alaska and Hawaii are inlcuded as insets.

The map's simple folding design with durable paper cover, allows it to be read like a book and easily folded back together. Road numbers and intermediate distances are clearly displayed with the more scenic routes highlighted in green.

This is a brand new title for ITMB, combining North and South Korea into one double-sided map focusing on the entire Korean Peninsula rather than its political components. The peninsula is undergoing a lot of change at the moment, and no one knows the ultimate outcome. North Korea seems interested in opening itself somewhat to South Koreans, and even if steps to date seem like baby ones, tensions between north and south seem cordial at the moment. For the time being, this map replaces our separate map of North Korea, as changing conditions makes it too risky for us to re-do our North Korea title until its future path is clearer. However, although this map also shows South Korea in good detail, we will continue marketing our Seoul and South Korea map as well as this one. It is still quite difficult to enter North Korea, but we have included an inset map of central Pyongyang and another of its metro system just in case one makes it to the city. South Korea has emerged as one of the most economically developed countries in Asia and is well worth visiting.

IThe large island off the east coast of Africa is Madagascar. The actual name of the country is the Malagasy Republic, but the public is much more likely to know the country by its island name, so we call our map by the island’s name, rather than using the country name. Makes sense to us! Regardless, this is a major touristic destination. The double-sided map covers the island in great detail, with an inset map of the capital city, Antananarivo. As with other ITMB maps, this one includes a listing of ‘must see’ attractions, such as Tsingy National Park and the famous Lemur’s Park. This is the replacement map for our former Papua New Guinea map. It has a similar cover picture, but for this edition, we have added the rest of the island, the Indonesian province of West Irian, to the other side of the paper, creating a complete island map (much as we did with Borneo and Dominican Republic/Haiti). This map also includes some of the islands west of New Guinea, including the newly independent country of East Timor (not in great detail, but it’s there). Naturally, the Papua side has been updated cartographically, and is MUCH more developed than the western side, but to me the real significance of this title is that one of the largest islands in the world is now completely mapped for the first time ever. This is the first new map of West Irian province for years, and adds interesting Indonesian islands from the Ceram Sea area, such as Anbom and Hatta to ITM’s detailed coverage of Indonesia. ITMB is pleased to re-introduce the Channel Islands map area after a lengthy hiatus of preparing new artwork. The first version of this part of Europe was licensed artwork by a local firm in Jersey, and upon running out of copies of the printed map, we opted to prepare fresh artwork of our own to continue this interesting corner of the continent to continue to be available. The islands, collectively known in English as the Channel Islands, are one of those anomalies that make Europe so attractive. They are part of Great Britain, but not part of the UK; hence, they are not part of the EU. They are self-governing entities ‘owned’ by the Queen in her role of being Duchess of Normandy. This is, of course, merely a hereditary situation, but the islands were the personal possessions of William the Conqueror in 1066, at the time he led Norman forces into Britain and won the Battle of Hastings. They remained his personal possessions and have been passed on from monarch to monarch for more than 950 years. Located just off the French coast, not too far from St. Malo, the islands were occupied by German forces during WW2, and are now readily available by ferry or airplane from both France and Britain. There are actually, five inhabited islands, of which Jersey and Guernsey are the largest. Alderney, Sark, and Herm make up the others. Ferries link the islands, and tourism is a major activity of the islands, along with banking. Most visitors arrive on Jersey, which on our map occupies an entire side. The airport is located near the western end of the island. Ferries arrive at St. Helier I’m very pleased that it is once again available.. Accommodations are plentiful and car rentals the best way to explore the island. The map shows all touristic attractions, roads, and rural restaurants/pubs. The reverse side is dominated by Guernsey, naturally, and its historic main town of St. Pete Port, but the shape of the island allowed us to include generous inset maps of Alderney and Sark, while including tiny Herm in the main map. This map has two covers: one showing Jersey and Guernsey, and the other noting Guernsey and Jersey, with two different pictures. And in the upper right corner, the flags of each island. This is one of those ‘must see before death’ touristic destinations and is well worth the visit.

Double-sided indexed map with street plans of central Ho Chi Min City, Da Lat and Can Tho. The main map at 1:800,000 shows the area’s road and rail networks and local airports. The Ho Chi Minh Trail is highlighted, as are national parks, nature reserves, beaches, numerous places of interest, fuel supplies, etc. Provincial boundaries are marked and names of administrative regions prominently shown. Topography is indicated by altitude colouring. Latitude and longitude lines are drawn at 30’ intervals.

On the reverse, the Mekong Delta is shown in greater detail at 1:500,000 with many small waterways. The map also includes street plans of central Ho Chi Minh City, Can Tho and Da Lat, annotated with symbols showing accommodation, various facilities and places of interest. Further insets show Phu Quoc Island at 1:200,000 and, for travelers venturing further north, the environs of Hue at 1:250,000.

All place names are shown in the Roman alphabet but with scrupulous transliteration, since the map was prepared by a company with strong Vietnamese connections and a number of local cartographers.

The map: The Chobe map consists of a complete map of Chobe on the front of the map and there are 5 individual maps of the major tourist areas on the back of the map. These are Chobe river front east, Chobe river front west, Nogatsaa, Savute and a small orientation map. The map was compiled by using satellite images, giving one a birds eye-view of the area. The roads were tracked by means of a GPS and then super-imposed on the photographs. Detailed GPS co-ordinates are supplied for game-drive areas. The Chobe map contains 126 GPS co-ordinates.

The four main tourist areas: The Chobe National Park consists of a variety of vegetation types and geological features, offering extreme contrasts and a wide range of wildlife experiences within the confines of one park. Four main tourist areas have been developed. They are as follows:

Chobe River Front - The Chobe is proud of and very famous for its abundance of elephants – the highest concentration anywhere in the world! There are also huge herds of buffalo, the Chobe bushbuck, the puku (an antelope), its rich birdlife and, not least, for its exquisite sunsets.

Linyanti - There are only 7 km of riverfront that can be used for game-drives and the road to get there is very sandy. To truly enjoy the Linyanti area one should visit one of the lodges but it is only possible to get to the lodges by air.

Savute - In sharp contrast to the lush Chobe riverfront is the almost desert-like landscape of the Savute. A scorching sun, loose, hot sand, animals escaping the heat by clumping together in the limited available shade and elephants impatiently lining up to get to the ever dwindling water supply. All of the above, offer a wildlife experience unique to Savute.

Nogatsaa area - When the pans have water, game viewing in this area is very good. Elephant activity is rife and one can watch the animals from the comfort of a hide at many of the water holes. This area is not open to the general public for camping but it is possible to visit the area on day-trips.

Saudi Arabia remains a unique entity in today's world, steadfastly governing itself in splendid isolation and fighting hard to keep 'modern' influences at bay. However, it has modern trappings such as an excellent road system, even though women aren't allowed to drive, and modern cities, even though women won't be allowed to vote in local elections until 2015. The cities of Medina and Mecca are closed to infidels. Kuwait, its immediate neighbour to the north is an open society and is included on this map as a very large inset, with a separate inset of Kuwait City. Central Riyadh is also included as an inset map, showing mosques, hotels, banks, and shopping areas.

Starting with Yukon (NB: not “the” Yukon, please), this portion of NWT was carved out into its own territory a century ago, as a result of the gold rush to the Klondike. It is the same map we’ve done since 1989, updated whenever necessary and includes inset maps of Whitehorse (the capital), Dawson City, and Watson Lake. It is still a territory, not a full province, although essentially self-administering. The NWT side of the sheet shows the brand new all-season gravel road to Tuktoyaktuk on the Arctic Ocean, opening up this part of Canada for land travel for the first time. An inset map of Yellowknife (the capital) is included.

This is the most recently released title in our Russia series. In this revised edition, we have expanded the area of coverage to include the portion of Russia known as the Far East Republic and the eastern portions of Siberia (in January, we released Siberia itself). Lets start with the Kamchatka peninsula itself. This is a very interesting adventure travel destination, famous for its geothermal geysers and its isolation from the rest of Russia. There is only one city of any size, Petropavlovsk Kamchatsky (which I genuinely hope is colloquially known as PK), the capital and location of the peninsula only significant airport. We have included an inset map of the city. We also include a map of the famous Valley of Geysers (south of Klyuchi). Interestingly, the peninsula has a town called Esso. The other side of the sheet portrays a vast region from the Russian occupied island of Sakhalin and the Okhotsk Sea north to that portion of what we call the Arctic Ocean but is really a series of seas (this one being the East Siberian Sea) and west to the Lena River. The Trans Siberian railway west towards Moscow is shown, as well as connections into Mongolia and China. This is not a well known region of Russia and is definitely for the adventurer (I would love to hear from anyone who has stayed at the hotel in Novaya Chara, which is as close to being the middle of nowhere I can imagine. Actually, this portion of Russia is loaded with hotels and camping grounds. The map also shows a fascinating road going from close to the border with China all the way to a bay on the ocean. That would be quite a trip to take!

Thinking back, it seems hard to believe that we have sold through five editions of Mongolia maps. Of course, it is a popular travel destination, and reliable information is now much more readily available than was the case when we first started mapping this vast and largely undeveloped desert country. I think it is fair to say that the main road network is pretty much fixed in position, but secondary roads tend to be tracks that follow diverse paths towards obscure destinations. Regardless, it is a lovely country to visit, with lots to see and friendly people. We've updated the Ulaanbaatar capital city inset map, noting the train ticketing office (which isn't in the train station), several museums and various temples.

Bermuda is a lovely mid-Atlantic island far off the coast of South Carolina. It is full of colonial architecture and an ‘island’ way of life. Tourism is a key ingredient of the colony’s lifeblood and the island is very popular with cruise ships. There is ample accommodation for longer-term visitors, good roads, and much history. The airport was built by the US Navy during WW2 and is still a US Naval Air Station, but shares the runway with civil aviation. The map includes an excellent inset of St. George’s, which still has its stocks close to the town hall, and another of Hamilton, the capital. This is where most cruise ships dock. For those with the time, the map shows the Railway Trail along the former route of the island’s now-defunct rail line. Lots to see; lots to do!

This map has been a difficult update, coming in the midst of the turmoil in Haiti caused by the earthquake in the spring of 2010. This is actually two separate maps sharing a single sheet of paper. The Dom Rep side was fairly straight-forward to update, as there has been little change, but the Haiti side needed a lot of time and energy. The earthquake revealed a previously unrealized reality – nobody had any information on Haiti. Our map was the only one in existence, and it proved to be too weak to meet the needs of humanitarian groups. They, however, provided a wealth of useful information as they reached out to isolated villages about road conditions, spelling of place names, and actual locations, which we have added to our artwork. This is a work in progress, so don’t expect perfection, but this map is far better than anything anyone has ever done for this country previously.
