Levendige vismarkten en uitgestrekte zandstranden, archeologische vindplaatsen en restanten uit de VOC-tijd, uitgestrekte theeplantages en groene rijstvelden, boeddhistische tempels  en kleurrijke festivals, heerlijke curry’s en exotische vruchten. Bijna 30 jaar woedde er op Sri Lanka een burgeroorlog. Vooral het noorden en oosten van het land hebben zwaar geleden onder het conflict.  Sinds juli 2011 kunnen toeristen weer veilig rondreizen in dit gebied dat jarenlang afgesloten was van de rest van Sri Lanka. In Jaffna, de voormalige hoofdstad van de Tamil Tijgers, zijn de herstelwerkzaamheden in volle gang. Onze verslaggever polst de stemming onder de Tamil bevolking. Van de ene kant zijn ze blij dat er eindelijk rust is, van de andere kant voelt het niet prettig dat ze nu onder curatele van het Srilankaanse leger staan.   

Vismarkt

Omdat de bezienswaardigheden op niet al te grote afstand van elkaar liggen, leent het eiland zich bij uitstek voor een rondtoer. Zoals gebruikelijk beginnen we onze reis in Negombo, de kustplaats waar zowel Britten, Portugezen als Nederlanders hun sporen hebben achtergelaten. Op de kleurrijke vismarkt aan zee vertellen vissers waarom ze de vis op het strand laten drogen.

Koningssteden

Met haar eeuwenoude tempels en ruïnepaleizen is de Culturele Driehoek niet alleen het geografische maar ook het culturele en historische hart van Sri Lanka. Het gebied is door Unesco uitgeroepen tot Werelderfgoed. Samen met een lokale gids verkent onze verslaggeefster per fiets de historische site van Polonnaruwa, een van de drie koningssteden. De man legt uit waarom Srilankanen in tegenstelling tot buitenlanders gratis toegang hebben tot de historische site.

In Kandy zijn we getuige van de Esala Perahera, een sprookjesachtige processie bij volle maan, waarbij een hoofdrol is weggelegd voor de Maligawa Raja, de indrukwekkende tempelolifant. Zowel voor boeddhisten als hindoes is het een heel belangrijk religieus festival.   

Ceylon thee

In het voetspoor van Britse kolonisten reizen we per trein naar het hooggelegen Ella. Onderweg kijken we uit over glooiende theevelden waar Tamil vrouwen de blaadjes voor de beroemde Ceylon thee plukken. Hoewel zij verantwoordelijk zijn voor het succes van de thee-export, een van de drijfveren van Sri Lanka’s economie, worden zij daar uiterst karig voor beloond.     

Verder zuidwaarts bezoeken we Galle, het schilderachtige vestingstadje uit de VOC-periode, waar herinneringen aan onze voorvaderen voortleven. Op korte afstand ligt Unawatuna, waar onze verslaggeefster een kookcursus volgt. Srilankanen zijn trots op hun keuken en delen met bezoekers graag het geheim van hun curry’s.  

Zeer goede reisgids voor zowel de georganiseerde maar vooral voor de zelfstandige reiziger. Boordevol informatie over reizen, slapen, eten, maar ook musea en cultuur. Deze vrouwen kopen kleding in winkels die gespecialiseerd zijn in tesettűr giyim, vrij vertaald als ‘(hoofd)bedekkende kleding. Deze stijl kenmerkt zich door een mix van modieus en islamitisch verantwoord. Turkije-deskundige Heleen van der Linden legt uit dat tessetűr niet alleen voor mode staat, maar voor een complete lifestyle. Overigens toont schrijfster Klaske Kassenberg aan dat er grote onderlinge verschillen bestaan. Waar de ene vrouw zelf haar toekomst bepaalt, gehoorzaamt de ander braaf haar man. 

Het plattelandsleven  

De Turkse zuidkust trekt ongetwijfeld de meeste toeristen. Behalve mooie stranden vind je hier prachtige natuurgebieden waar de seizoenen het levensritme bepalen. Reisbegeleidster Elsbeth Jongsma bewandelt een deel van de Lycian Way, een ruim 500 kilometer lange wandelroute die langs tal van archeologische overblijfselen voert. Tijdens de tocht doorkruist ze uiteenlopende landschappen en overnacht ze bij de bewoners thuis. Ellis Flipse, die enkele jaren in een dorp bij de kust woonde, spot vogels in een natuurgebied bij Dalyan en helpt mee met de jaarlijkse olijvenoogst. 

Grotwoningen
