Turkey is a fascinating country; so much potential, and seemingly unable to focus on progress as opposed to ideology. Touristically, the country is quite safe, but internal politics are as divided here as in Egypt (and seemingly every Muslim country) between secularists (if it is proper to call them that) who want a 'normal' country with a division between secular and religious affairs and those wanting a more traditional religious society where religious values shape the society. Our first edition sold out in a little more than a year, which is pretty amazing in itself, and we have made major improvements to this edition to maintain its popularity. The biggest change is that we have more strongly emphasized the major road network, as most visitors stay on the well-travelled routes around the country, rather than taking back roads to small villages. The second change has been to increase the font size for major urban areas, to make them easier to read. Turkey is a very large country geographically and there is no way cartographically to overcome the spatial relationships of the east-west stretch to the north-south relative shortness. If we have erred, it is on the side of detail, but for anyone driving around the country, such detail is essential.

Eisenhower National System of Interstate and Defense Highways") authorized by the Federal Aid Highway Act of 1956 and supported by former US President Eisenhower who had been impressed by the German Autobahn system, is a network of roadways interconnecting the nation. The 45 walking routes in this Isle of Arran guidebook range from easy 3km (2 miles) nature trails to long arduous mountain routes with scrambles (up to 32km) providing thorough coverage of Arran, including the ascent of Goatfell and nearby Holy Isle. Most routes are 10km to 15km long but many give opportunities to create longer cross island walks.

This guidebook presents a selection of 45 day walks on the popular and accessible Isle of Arran. The routes are between 2 miles (3km) and 20 miles (32km) in length, from easy waymarked forest trails to more arduous mountain walks, exposed ridge routes and scrambles. There are linear and circular walks to choose from, and opportunities to link routes together and create longer walks across the length and breadth of the island. Approaching the eastern part of central Scotland, where the Grampians dominate the horizon, it appears at first glance to be mountain country. Perthshire has enough lochs to vie with Cumbria's Lake District. Somit gewinnt auch die albanische Sprache immer mehr an Bedeutung, die außer im Land selbst von weiteren drei Millionen im Ausland (besonders im Kosovo) lebenden Albanern gesprochen wird.
Das Albanische vertritt, ohne lebende Verwandte, selbständig einen Zweig der indoeuropäischen Sprachfamilie, ist jedoch durch benachbarte Sprachen spürbar beeinflußt worden. Leider ist es nicht ganz einfach zu erlernen und hält für den Sprecher einige Hürden, vor allem im grammatischen Bereich bereit. Dennoch ist eine Verständigung in alltäglichen Situationen schon mit relativ einfachen Mitteln möglich, und es lohnt sich als Reisender auf jeden Fall, zumindest einige Grundkenntnisse im Albanischen zu haben. Selbst mit nur einigen kleinen Floskeln wird man von vielen Einheimischen schon freundlicher und offenherziger aufgenommen und hat eine Chance die stolzen Bewohner Albaniens von einer gänzlich anderen Seite kennenzulernen.
