Entre plaine du Forez et du Roannais, la Loire a percé ce verrou volcanique et modelé le relief. Parfois tumultueuse, elle reste discrète et ne se laisse voir qu’au bord des gorges. La tour de Cleppé trône dans la plaine du Forez. Le château de la Roche émerge au-dessus des eaux…

A noter que les gorges de la Loire sont un lieu de rencontre entre l’eau et les zones sèches, entre les espèces méditerranéennes et celles du nord, d’où une forte diversité de la flore et de la faune. Sous l’appellation "gorges de la Loire aval", le site a ainsi été classé Natura 2000 car 47 espèces d’oiseaux rares y ont été répertoriées.

De Tour du Saint-Bernard is een route van 6 etappes en 1 variant tussen Wallis en Valle d'Aosta, die met elkaar verbonden is via de historische Col du Grand Saint-Bernard en de Col du Grand Ferret. Geografisch gezien ligt het tussen de Mont Blanc en Grand Combin, beslaat het 5 valleien en raakt het 3 dorpen. Het ideale startpunt is Bourg-Saint-Pierre, maar je kunt ook starten vanaf de Col du Grand-Saint-Bernard zelf, vanuit de Italiaanse en Zwitserse Ferretvallei of vanuit Liddes. De routeboekjes van de Grote Routepaden in Frankrijk ( Grande Randonnees ) zijn bij veel wandelaars bekend. De boekjes bevatten dan ook alles wat je ervan mag verwachten. Op de topografische kaartjes (tegenwoordig meest in kleur) van de topografische dienst van Frankrijk IGN 1:50.000 staan de wandelroutes ingetekend. In combinatie met de markering langs de GR paden maakt dit het volgen van de routes over het algemeen redelijk eenvoudig. Naast wat beperkte achtergondinformatie vooral zeer veel praktische info: accommodaties onderweg, horeca, loopafstanden, looptijden, openbaar vervoer etc. 

De gidsjes zijn wel franstalig, maar door de nogal praktische informatie en weergave hiervan ( veel symbolen ) ook goed te begrijpen voor diegenen die hier niet zo in thuis zijn.

The East Highland Way is a detailed and descriptive guide to the route developed by Kevin Langan in 2007. Beginning in Fort William and culminating in Aviemore, the trail forms a new link route between the northern end of the West Highland Way and the southern end of the Speyside Way. In addition, the route joins with the Great Glen Way at its southern point in Fort William, making this an exciting new challenge for seasoned walkers and amateurs alike. Not only an illustrated route description, Langan also details the plethora of wildlife to be spotted along the way in each section of the walk. The book also provides information on the various historical attractions with which the route intersects, including Old Inverlochy Castle and Kingussie's Ruthven Barracks. Langan's route has been optimised to engage with accommodation where possible, and these accommodation options are included in the guide.
